We Love Christmas!

The minute we got back from our Thanksgiving travels,
we decorated our apartment.
Well... just our living room.
All 300 square feet of it.
We don't have too many decos...
Our favorite thing to do these days,
is light our balsam candle to make it smell Christmas-y
(because we unfortunately don't have a real tree),
crank up the Christmas tunes,
sit by the twinkle of the tree,
and sip hot chocolate.
We finished our Christmas shopping in early November, so we haven't had to worry about gifts and WOW!
It's made the season so much simpler!
Why didn't I figure that out sooner?
Every year, I find myself wishing that the Christmas season could last six months instead of one...

A Christmas-y Top Ten of Crazies...

Winter and cold weather brings out a lot of great moments from my students.
Let's put it this way... Texans are wimps.
With a capitol “W”.
I am sad to say, that I too am becoming “wimpified”...
but haven't arrived to my capitol “W” yet.
Don't worry.

10.
One of my janitor friends (because it is necessary to survival in public education to have janitor friends)
came in to my classroom as I was on my way out, and we had a little chat.

Friend: “Stay warm this weekend! It's so cold, it makes me sick! Literally- I get sick with this weather!”
Me: “It's not so bad! My family is playing in the snow back in Utah!”
Friend: “Oh no... I couldn't handle that. Doesn't the snow make you sick?”
Me: “No...”
Friend: “Well, can you believe it... I heard, it's going to be COLD this Christmas!”
Me: “Christmas is SUPPOSED TO BE COLD!!!!!”
Who are these people?
9.
My Dance Club went to go see “The Nutcracker” at the Houston Ballet.
They were SOOO excited and marveled at the beautiful theatre.
Although once the ballet started.... I lost half of them to a nap.
Baby steps.
I'll get them to like ballet...
one day.

8.
My two most hated common questions...
“Mizz- you have lotion? I'm ashy...”
No.
And if I did- I wouldn't give you any.

“MEEEEES- What are we doing today?”
I take time to write it up on the board everyday... you'd think they could take time to not annoy me by asking me that question. Steam seriously comes out my ears when someone asks me.
It shouldn't bother me so much.
But it does.

7.
“Miss- I can't dance.”
“Why?”
“I was diagnosed with 'Tender Feet Syndrome'”.
“That's not even real. Go get dressed.”
“But Miss!”

6.
As we prepared to go “The Nutcracker” I gave a synopsis to some of the girls wanting to know more information.
“It's about a young girl who's given a Nutcracker. The Nutcracker comes to life and takes her on a magical journey.”
“Oh yeah! I heard about this on the news! It's a true story, right?”
“Nutcrackers coming to life?.... No sweetie.... and Santa isn't real either.”

5.
“BAH MISS! WHY IS IT SO COLD?!?!”
“Well... it IS winter, so let's get over it.”
What did I tell you?
Wimps!
All of them!

4.
One of my students leaves his stuff everywhere.
Which also means, he's losing his stuff as well.
One day (of many, but this particular one) he lost his phone.
“Where'd you last see it?”
“I don't know...”
“What does it look like?”
“Ummm it's white...”
“Well come over to my phone and let's call it to see if it's hiding in the room.”
“Miss... I don't know my phone number.”

How do these kids ever end up being able to text each other if no one knows their number?
Confused...

3.
“Miss- it's my New Year's Resolution to have pink hair.”
And you thought my students were shallow....

2.
As we finished up our tap unit we recorded our dance and I told students to watch their feet in the mirror to see if the correct part of their foot was striking the floor.
“But... I'm confused Ms. Brame.... what does “washing our teeth” have to do with tap?”

1.
As students were walking into class, and I noticed a student with a bandaged wrist.
I pulled her aside to talk...
“What happened to your wrist? Is it ok?”
“Oh yeah Miss, it will be ok. I just sprung it.”
“You what?” (trying to see if she'd catch her grammatical error)
“I sprung it. I fell off the trampoline.”
Nope she didn't catch it.
And as I tried to contain my huge guffaw, she proceeded to tell me her story and continued to use “sprung” multiple times.
Classic.

Life...

My whole life I was taught that if I worked hard for something, I would get it.
If I wanted to audition for a dance team, I did.
If I wanted to get into BYU, I did.
If I wanted to go on a mission, I did.
If I wanted to run a marathon, I did.
If I wanted to get married in the temple, I did.
I knew that if I wanted something bad enough, then I could get it!
... And that's the way it always worked...
No one told me that working hard and NOT getting what you want would be a part of life also.

Enter infertility.
Four years.
Multiple doctors.
Countless tests, surgeries, pills, shots...
I think that's why infertility has been such a beast.
How can I work so hard at something, and not see any results?
How can I see doctors for four plus years and not have any children by now?
Previously, if I wanted something bad enough- I could work hard and get it.

Looking back at what the four years have brought to my life, I can only count my blessings.
Of course, I don't want to say that the past four years of infertility have been butterflies and roses.
It hasn't.
There are no rose-colored glasses here.
Would I trade infertility for a different trial?
Absolutely.
I don't wish the physical and emotional pain of getting 50+ negative pregnancy tests month after month upon anyone.
Quite frankly- infertility sucks.
And yes- I would trade it.
But, I'll tell you some things I wouldn't trade...

1.
Spending time with my patient and wonderful husband.
Along with infertility (often) comes marriage counseling- because let's face it... infertility can be detrimental to a lot of marriages.
The blessing underneath all of this- is that this trial has brought my husband and I so much closer together.
I would still trade the trial- but not my time with him.
The past five years of marriage have been so great.

2.
Being able to travel.
We've been blessed to be able to visit different cultures and countries throughout the past five years.
There is something therapeutic about visiting people in different parts of the world...
you come to appreciate different types of people, and different ways of life...
it helps you to realize just how blessed you really are.
I would still trade the trial- but not my travels experiencing the world.
The past four years have been enlightening.

3.
Having a job that I love.
I love, love, love what I do.
I love teenagers.
I love sharing my passion of dance with them.
I'm so grateful for a job that keeps me busy and keeps my mind off infertility.
I would still trade the trial- but not my time teaching.
The past three years have been eye opening.

This retrospection doesn't come because this trial is over.
I'm not pregnant.
In fact, IVF is in our future...
but I'm just so grateful to know that through all of this-
there are blessings.
And there will continue to be blessings...

Last Day of Turkey Vacation...

Although we had our last day in Scotland- our trip still wasn't QUITE over.
He flew out of Edinburgh Saturday morning, and spent the last half day in Dublin.
We had such a clear view as we flew in!
First things first...
some food.
We grabbed some grub at a little grocery store and picnicked in the park- St. Stephen's Green.
We just explored downtown Dublin... with bouts of going inside to thaw.
We walked around this fun mall for quite some time.
We found the theatre that Riverdance performs in!
Sadly- they weren't doing a show that night...
Boo.
Downtown Dublin.
Another walk past the Dublin Castle...
And Christ's Church...
We had a hostel for this night... our first hostel of the trip.
It was pretty much the bare minumum.
But hey- it had clean sheets.
We cleaned up and got ready for our Irish dinner and dance show!
We had pretty awesome seats...
(that's the stage behind Jon)
and had some pretty awesome food!
Irish stew...
Prime rib...
 And cute lil' desserts.
 After dinner, the music started!
And then the dancers came out!
So fun.
Makes us miss those folk dancing days.
Sadly, we were up at 3am and out of Ireland by 6am the next morning!
Goodbye beautiful British Isles, we had the best of times.

Last Scottish Post...

Friday we spent the day exploring Edinburgh!
We woke up early and started our trek up to Edinburgh Castle...
Real men carry strollers...
 Beautiful huh?
We were in awe.
Our one of few group pics
Let's go inside!
And the view from the top was pretty stellar!
It was a rather cold and blustery day, which made our city tour kind of rough- BUT there were so many great things to see!
We found another free tour... and we were off!
 Down the Royal Mile
Tron Church
AND one of the best parts of the tour, was that our tour guide took us by lots of Harry Potter nerd sites.
We loved it.
Here we have J.K. Rowling's hands!
 I've officially touched J.K. Rowling.
Life complete.
This is where J.K. Rowling would come to write (and to save money on her heating bill!)
Crazy to think that now she's one of the wealthiest women in the world.

Out the back of the cafe, you can see this castle... which people call the "original Hogwarts". It serves as a school and has four main towers... maybe where she got the idea for the four houses of Hogwarts?
Also out the back of the cafe is this graveyard.
J.K. Rowling took the advice of other writer colleagues who told her to gather interesting character names from graveyards.
(Creepy, but ok.)
In this graveyard you can find the last name of McGonagall, Moody, and...
 Thomas Riddell!
Buried next to his father... also Thomas Riddell...
we're pretty sure it's Voldemort's real grave.
Warming up and food was a must after traipsing around the cold city...
So we stopped in a recommended pub for some Haggis, Neeps and Tatties.
Haggis = sheep lungs, intestines, and other bits... mixed with oats and herbs... and then boiled inside a sheep stomach
Neeps = mashed turnips
Tatties = mashed potatoes
Smothered in gravy.
Not gonna lie- it was kind of delicious.
 Edinburgh- you're amazing.
