Top 10!

I guess it's been a while since I posted some top ten!
So here we go...

10.
Sometimes I forget how big our school is.
4,500 students, grades 9-12.
We have the 5th largest school in Texas!
That's huge!
No wonder I have gray hairs.

9.
Speaking of all these students...
a couple weeks ago we had a blood drive at our school.
Found out today that 40% of that blood couldn't be used because of STDs.
So sad...
But hey- that's my school!

 8.
"Miss! I found my tights OUTSIDE my locker so I can't dress out!"
"I'm not really understanding your logic... why can't you dress out?"
"Someone prolly wore my tights!"
"It's ok- just put them on."
"Miss! What if that person had chlamydia?!?!?!?!"
I laughed.
But now I'm realizing that she may have had a point after hearing about the blood drive results!

7.
Let's just keep going with this...
one of our students got TB this past month,
and thus the WHOLE student body had to be tested for TB.
Yes you got it.
All 4,500 students.
It was insane-o.

6.
This next statement just sums up the attitude of the majority of my students.
We have to make up two bad weather days this year...
one was this past Monday on President's Day.
When I asked my students about it they responded-
"I'm not coming! Why should I be punished because of the weather?"
And a lot of them didn't show up Monday!
They do what they want and think it's ok...
Oy.

5.
We had a Zumba class for one of our Dance Club activities this past month...
I had to sit out because I wasn't feeling well.
My janitor friend came in during it to take out our trash.
She immediately jumped in and told me how Hispanic music is the best for dancing.
She looked at me sitting down and said,
"You don't need to dance because you're so small.
What size are you anyway?"
"Umm... a 6?"
"Ohhh... well maybe you should be doing this then."
Gotta love blunt people.

4.
I learn new words everyday.
Apparently a girl who likes thicker boys is called a "chubby chaser".
Who knew?

3.
We started selling fruit snacks for our Dance Club fundraiser.
I was kind of appalled when one of my students told me she took her little brother with her to sell fruit snacks door to door, so people didn't think she was going to rape little kids.
Um, what?
Excuse me?

2.
I've had to give the hygiene talk to many a people...
but it hit a new all-time awkward when I had to give that hygiene talk to one of my only male students.
Gosh.
Boys can be smelly.

1.
"Miss, miss! I can't remember... is it 'above' or 'under' the influence?"
Hahaha.

Last Day and Coming Home...

Day 9
This day was by FAR my favorite out of the whole trip.
It was incredible!
BUT I'm a sucker for sun, beach and beautiful water... which this day definitely had.
We walked quite a ways, down to the Port of Sorrento to wait for our ferry to take us to the Island of Capri!
We weren't sure how much time we'd have to get into the water... so we took advantage of dipping our toes in!
Aboard our ferry!
And 30 minutes later, we were in Capri!
First item of business was a boat ride around the island...
 The water was beautiful...
A natural bridge...
Legend has it, if you kiss under the center of this arch- you'll be together FOREVER!
So kiss we did!
Once back on the island, we took a funicular up to the top for an awesome view of the island!
We ended up having TWO hours of free time and we were all able to go swimming!
Dream come true!
We were all sooooo excited to swim in the beautiful water!

Jon fell asleep under his umbrella :)
We were all sun-kissed and happy on the way home.
We took a ferry over to Naples and found our bus there...
and a cool castle.
We had another bus ride back to Rome,
and found ourselves at our last hotel of the trip.
We had a delicious meal...
And the girls were SO sad to say "goodbye" to our fearless tour director- Gianluca.
He was wonderful!
The next morning we had a wake-up call at 3am...
and loaded the bus for the Rome Airport.
Turns out we got there a little early for British Airways.
We camped out in line until someone showed up!
We tried to catch some "Zzzz's" on the way...
And were all pretty excited to be headed back to the States!
Goodbye Italy!

Day 8 of our Crazy Italian Adventures

Day 8
Was MUCH more chill than our day in Rome.
Hallelujah!
It was nice to give our legs a break!
We drove from Rome, down South to the coast...
to see Pompeii!
On the road we passed by Mt. Vesuvius... the killer of an entire city.
I found everything about Pompeii fascinating!
It's so crazy to think that this city was just completely buried alive in 79 AD, yet so perfectly preserved and still around almost 2000 years later.
There is still excavation happening all around the city.

Crazy to think that the paint on the walls is 2000 years old!
Walking down the Main Street of Pompeii
Can  you see the ruts in the stones?
It's from chariots!
The Romans were such an advanced society.
This is their "men's club" sauna.
Original tile that was used as sidewalk...
 The main square
One of the cool things about the ash that fell over Pompeii, was that even though the trapped bodies decomposed and disintegrated, the ash created a perfect cast of the body... allowing us to see how people spent the last few minutes of their life.
Morbid, yet kind of cool!
Down below Pompeii we had a delicious lunch,
and marveled at the size of these lemons!
Lemons are a big deal in this region, and they don't mess around!
They are HUGE!
We had many lemon slushies :)
After Pompeii, we had a beautiful drive along the coast on our way to Sorrento!
Our hotel in Sorrento was BEAUTIFUL and sooo spacious,
with a great view from the balcony!
Thankful for our chill day, the kids wanted to take a dip in the pool once we got to our hotel!
And of course, no day is complete without a big dinner!
These crazies decided that after swimming, it was "fro" night!
They have some great hair!
That evening- we went to downtown Sorrento, and saw the prettiest sunset!
Downtown
We did some shopping...
And what is a night in Italy without gelato?
Mmmmm....
